oufti \ uf.ti \:
(Belgium) (Liège Area) interjection which marks surprise, astonishment or relief.
- Oufti! I have never seen anything like that before.
- Oufti! It’s done.
- Oufti! is most often used without other words, accompanied by gesture(s) or mimicry. It can express a multitude of emotions: astonishment, sadness, compassion, incomprehension, anger … Moreover, the University of Liège has prepared a small satellite named Oufti-1 (www.oufti.ulg.ac.be), which was put in orbit in 2015.
We stumbled across this lovely word when we started our first bike trip together in Liège in the spring of 2014 and have used it ever since. It’s a very handy multi-purpose word, but especially after reaching the summit of a climb.
Oufti is also a chocolate-covered banana sweet, which is a lucky coincidence since we love stacking chocolate when we are out riding.
